I think it’s safe to say by now that we could NOT be happier at Goldfish Swim School of Evanston, IL. It’s been a while since I gave a full update on Miri’s swimming progress, so I wanted to briefly pop on here to do that!
Some updates:
If you’ve missed our Insta-updates, we have some exciting news! Miri leveled up to Junior 2! Technically, the Junior levels are for 3-4 year olds, but we bumped Miri up to Junior 1 when she was 2.5. Now she’s swimming right alongside kids that are a year or year and a half older than she is. And she’s doing just swimmingly (pun is always intended).
But let me back up a bit. It took Miri a while to get to where she is in swimming today. After we came back to Goldfish over the summer (see this post) it took Miri a while to re-acclimate with the water and to create positive experiences with her teacher in the pool.
After so much patience on both Miri’s amazing teacher’s end and mine (it’s really frustrating to watch your child struggle), we finally started to see some serious progress. And once Miri started to be comfortable and have fun, the progression came on rather quickly.
Miri is now swimming 5 ft independently and floating on her back by herself. This is almost unbelievable to think of when you see that she wouldn’t even put her head under just a few months ago. She’s working on rolling over to her back in the water while swimming. I’m so glad they teach this because that’s a water safety technique to get a respite while swimming longer distances.
Another water safety lesson they teach the kids is to recognize the lifeguards. The kids point to them and wave at them every class. It’s so important to know who the lifeguards are at your pool and know that they are there to help you, if you need it.
What’s next:
Shortly after we found out that Miri would be going to the next level (Junior 2), we also found out that Miss Karla was leaving Goldfish to pursue other things. We were SO SAD. We still really miss her, but the amazing Goldfish manager at Evanston, Sara, worked with us to find a new teacher who would connect with Miri and really help her succeed.
While we’ve only had about 4 classes with Miss Lizzie, I can see the relationship already blossoming. It is truly wonderful to feel so taken care of and accommodated at a place we’ve truly grown to love.
Get excited…
And I’m super excited to announce that our little Az Man will be starting swimming shortly after he turns 2 (in January). I’m really looking forward to having both of my kids in the water — having fun and learning life-saving skills. I hope Azi will adjust okay, but I think having Miri there will be so helpful.
Keep an eye out for more awesome things that are coming with A Glass of Goldwater and Goldfish Swim School Evanston in the coming months. Winter is definitely NOT the time to stop swimming! The fun is just beginning!
