I’ll be honest with you. Our family is largely screen free. I’m not a screen-free preacher, but this sort of just happened to us over the last 3 years, and it works for our family. We aren’t against screen time at all, but we limit it to travel and sick days. We don’t have a TV, so we knew we had to get devices for our kids (ages 5 and 6) for screen time. The Amazon Kindle Fire Kids Tablet fit the description for what we wanted. The most important factor was being able to limit what our kids could watch and how they could “surf”. The Fire Kids is the best as far as limiting access and creating parental control, in my opinion.
I’m pretty careful about what I let my kids watch and play, so I paid careful attention to the apps and shows I was downloading onto my kids’ tablets. Let me save you some legwork and share my picks with you. Cheers to making travel easier and whine-free for us all!
Kindle Fire Apps for Art and Pretend Play:
Coloring Games for Kids and Drawing Book for Toddlers is the most basic coloring app you can get for kids. It comes with 700+ coloring pages, lots of coloring games and also educational coloring pages as well to help develop skills.
Drawing for Kids is your basic drawing app where kids have the freedom to draw any sort of picture they want digitally. It can also be used as scrap paper for doing math problems, practicing words, etc.
For your Disney lover and creative, I present Disney Coloring World. Your one stop shop for games, coloring and all things Disney.
Ice Queen Salon is a big favorite of my 6-year-old daughter’s. She can play with it for long periods of time. If you observe modest dress guidelines, the princesses in this app are not modestly dressed. We discuss this with our daughter, but it’s something to keep in mind if you value that.
Crayola Nail Party is another favorite. You can do manicures of all kinds. It’s a great app for your little who loves all things girlie!
LEGO ® DUPLO ® WORLD is perfect for your little lego lovers. Lots of games and creative activities for them to play legos without all the tiny pieces!
Kindle Fire Apps for Learning:
Super Why! ABC Adventures and Super Why! Power to Read are two great apps. They’re $3.99 each, but offer lots of basic letter learning, tracing and phonics games.
PBS Kids Games and the PBS Kids apps are great, free apps where your kids can play and watch their favorite PBS kids shows.
Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood : Play at Home with Daniel is fun for even the youngest toddlers. It’s very easy to navigate and will teach your child lessons along the way.
Daniel Tiger’s Grr-ific Feelings is the best app for kids and their emotions. We all wish we could be as perfect as Daniel and his mom all the time, so why not start learning from them in the app?
Ryan’s World has amazing science experiment videos that my kids absolutely LOVE to watch as well. We also download their favorite episodes of Daniel Tiger, Barney, Dinosaur Train, etc.
I’d love to get some recs in here for older kids, so if you have apps for kids 10+, leave your recommendations in the comments!
