If you’ve been around here for a while, you know that the Goldwaters are BIG FANS of swim lessons from a young age. Both of my kids have been in lessons since they were two. Putting them in lessons was always something I knew I wanted because my child drowning is one of my greatest fears. So I placed a very high value on water safety. And with two kids who can swim independently in the pool and one child who is swimming laps and even butterfly (!), I can say that this was absolutely the right decision for my kids and our family.
You may be thinking, “Why are we talking about this in the Winter?” Well, that’s a great question.
If you think about it, winter is the perfect time to start swim lessons for a couple of main reasons:
- Learn to swim in winter before the “real” pool season starts in summer. Your child will be a much more confident swimmer in summer if they learn to swim BEFORE they’re in the pool every day.
- Everyone is so cooped up inside in winter, and swim lessons are the perfect way to get your kids to swim out some of that pent up energy.
But beyond those main reasons, there are some other benefits of swim lessons that you might not think of automatically.
Let’s talk about confidence.
Big Blue Swim School first places your child in a level based on an initial evaluation. In each level, there are skills your child must complete before they can move up to the next. As the parent, you have access to those skill requirements and levels via the Big Blue App. These skills and levels give the kids goals to strive for, and when they complete them, they not only get a ribbon, but they also have such a sense of achievement.
My kids tell me what skills they need to finish doing to get to the next level, and it’s on their mind all week until we have swim lessons. They love that sense of accomplishment when they move up to the next level, and it really boosts their confidence. As a parent, I do everything I can to give my children different opportunities to help them gain independence, confidence and come into their own selves. The staff and lesson model at Big Blue help my kids do that.
Above all else, water safety is the greatest gift you can give to your child. It will absolutely save their life in case of emergency, and you will never regret teaching your child how to swim. It’s always the right time to sign your child up for swim lessons, so let that time be now.
