Treating others with kindness is a lesson I’m constantly teaching my kids, but what about ourselves? It’s human nature to be kinder to others than you are to yourself and I’m here to tell you that while it is important to be kind to everyone around us, this way of thinking is silly. We should be treating ourselves with just as much kindness as everyone around us. We should be shifting from these thoughts of self-criticism to self-compassion. By being mindful of our feelings and practicing kindness towards ourselves, we can be infinitely happier. But shifting that mindset doesn’t happen overnight. It’s something we have to continuously work on. Not sure where to start? I’m sharing 5 ways to treat yourself with kindness every day!
5 Ways to Treat Yourself with Kindness Every Day
To start adjusting the way you think and how you treat yourself, incorporate these five ways to treat yourself with kindness into your every day routine.
Prioritize Yourself
There’s no denying that life can get pretty hectic. From getting work done and chasing the kids around to carving out time for friends and family and all of the other day-to-day tasks that need to get done, it can be easy to put your needs on the back burner. By prioritizing yourself, even if it’s ten minutes every day dedicated to something you love, you’ll do wonders for your mental health and self-esteem. When you schedule time for yourself and maintain boundaries, you are telling yourself you matter, you value yourself, and that you are important.
Discover Your Own Love Language
Knowing your partners’ love language can do wonders for your relationship, but what about your own love language? Knowing your own love language is a great way to shopping kindness to yourself on a day-to-day basis. For example, I your love language is quality time, schedule time each day to spend with yourself. If your love language is words of affirmation, remind yourself on a daily basis that you’re doing a great job and everything you do is appreciated.
Stop Trying to Be Perfect
Perfection is unachievable. Humans are meant to mess up. We’re meant to overcome challenges. By setting aside the thoughts of perfectionism, you can embrace your life how it is and the little moments that make you smile each day. And when you do mess up, laugh at yourself! Think about what you achieved, what you learned, and how you can move forward.
Positive Affirmations
One of my favorite ways to eliminate negative thoughts is by practicing positive affirmations. I write these down and I stand in front of the mirror and say them out loud each day. This helps to reinforce these affirmations and gives me the confidence I need to talk, view, and treat myself with kindness. When doing positive affirmations, focus on who you are as a person rather than how you look. Some affirmations I love include:
- I am lovable just as I am
- I am getting better and better every day
- I am an unstoppable force of nature
Be Your Own Friend
No matter what your friends do, you’ll always treat them with kindness. You give them empathy, compassion, and understanding so they know they are supported. Take those lessons and treat yourself the same way!
